The CIS Conference The conference on Inequalities and Social Exclusion began with a series of presentations and debates focused on “Social Inequalities Today.” The event started at 10:00 a.m. with a presentation by José Félix Tezanos, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at UNED and President of the CIS. His presentation set the tone for the discussions, highlighting the importance of addressing inequalities in advanced societies of the 21st century.
At 10:15 a.m., Valpy Fitzgerald, Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford, presented “Forms of Poverty in Advanced Societies of the 21st Century,” followed by a lively debate at 11:00 a.m. Later, at 12:00 p.m., Carlos Berzosa, Emeritus Professor of Economics at the Complutense University of Madrid, addressed “Global Challenges of Inequality in the 21st Century,” before a coffee break at 11:30 a.m.
The afternoon session began at 4:00 p.m. with a presentation by Inma Pastor Gosálbez, Professor of Sociology at Rovira i Virgili University. Marina Subirats, Professor Emerita of Sociology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, discussed “Gender Inequality and the Feminist Movement in Spain” at 4:15 p.m. The presentations continued with Ángel Belzunegui, Professor of Sociology at Rovira i Virgili University, speaking on “Inequalities and Social Dualities” at 5:00 p.m., followed by a coffee break at 5:45 p.m.
Olga Salido Cortés and Ildefonso Marqués, Professors of Sociology at Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Seville, respectively, explored “Social Mobility in Spain” at 6:00 p.m. The day concluded with a presentation by Fabrizio Bernardi, Professor of Sociology at UNED, on “Educational inequalities due to economic and class reasons” at 6:45 p.m.
The second day of the conference focused on “Economic and Social Inequalities.” Ángel Belzunegui opened the session at 9:30 a.m., followed by Sandra Fachelli and Pedro López-Roldán, who discussed “Social Inequalities in the Spanish Labor Market” at 9:45 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., José Pérez Montiel presented “Income Distribution and Social Inequality.” After a coffee break at 11:15 a.m., José Félix Tezanos discussed “Trends in Social Stratification in Spain (Part 1)” at 11:45 a.m. The morning session concluded with Obdulia Taboadela speaking on “The Middle Classes in Spain” at 12:30 p.m., followed by a discussion at 1:15 p.m.
In the afternoon, Verónica Díaz Moreno opened the session at 4:00 p.m. with a presentation on “Gender and Age Inequalities.” At 4:15 p.m., José Félix Tezanos and Óscar Iglesias presented “Trends in Social Stratification in Spain (Part 2).” Hilde Sánchez Morales closed the presentations with “Poverty and Social Exclusion as Problems in Contemporary Societies” at 5:00 p.m., followed by a final coffee break at 5:45 p.m. The conference concluded with a final debate at 6:00 p.m. on “Trends in Social Inequality in a Changing World.”
