On November 6, 2024, the AEMPS headquarters in Madrid hosted a special event as part of the agency’s 25th anniversary celebrations. The event began at 4:30 p.m. with registration and accreditation of attendees, followed by the official opening remarks by Carmen Ruiz-Villar, Head of the AEMPS Department of Medical Devices and Cosmetics. An engaging dialogue then took place between Agustí Vidal, renowned chemist and perfumer, and Rosario C. Sánchez, Head of the AEMPS Area of Cosmetic Products, who addressed current issues in the field of cosmetic products and their regulation.
Medical devices and cosmetics were a central topic of discussion throughout the event. These products, ranging from medical devices such as prostheses, dressings, and thermometers to everyday cosmetics like creams, makeup, and fragrances, are essential for public health and well-being. Rigorous regulation of these products is crucial to ensure their safety and efficacy for consumers. The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) is responsible for this task, establishing quality requirements and monitoring compliance with standards at every stage, from production to distribution.
The AEMPS, attached to the Ministry of Health, has been working for 25 years to protect and promote public health by regulating medicines, medical devices, and cosmetics in Spain. Its role includes not only the approval and monitoring of these products but also research and the development of policies that strengthen the sector and increase consumer safety and confidence. The agency is a national and international leader and collaborates closely with European institutions to harmonize regulations and best practices in the healthcare field.
