A cutting-edge tool for training future researchers and advancing the study of the Earth and the environment
Seville, July 2024 – At an event held last June, organized by the S22 Digital agency, the National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA) and the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI) officially presented the new Airborne Research Platform (PAI), based on an Airbus C295 aircraft adapted for scientific purposes.
Manufactured in Spain, the C295 has been equipped with specialized technology to facilitate in-flight data collection, with applications in atmospheric and environmental research, Earth observation, and remote sensing. This aircraft represents a high-value strategic infrastructure for experimental trials and instrumental testing, and is available to both public and private entities, including INTA, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and European research centers interested in conducting aerial scientific campaigns.
The aircraft will be based in Andalusia and is part of the Aerospace PERTE program, promoted by the Spanish Government. The project is funded by the CDTI through its Scientific and Technological Initiatives call for proposals, co-financed with ERDF funds, and governed by a collaboration agreement between the CDTI and INTA.
Scientific Training and Innovation from the Air
The Aerial Research Platform will not only enable the development of advanced scientific projects, but will also contribute to the specialized training of young researchers in the field of Earth Sciences. Thanks to its capacity to generate high-precision geospatial data, it will be key in areas such as agriculture, geology, the atmosphere, inland water management, and the study of the marine environment.
With the presentation of this platform—successfully organized by S22 Digital in June 2024—Spain reaffirms its commitment to technological innovation and environmental research, taking another step towards science applied to the major challenges of the present and the future.
