Extremadura Hosts the CanSat 2026 National Final for the First Time
When a soft drink can teaches space engineering
The Talavera la Real Air Base, home of Ala 23 of the Spanish Air and Space Force, hosted the CanSat 2026 National Final on 12 and 13 May, one of the most prestigious educational competitions promoted by the European Space Agency (ESA) through ESERO Spain.
What CanSat Is (and Why It Matters)
CanSat is an international educational programme in which students design, build and launch a minisatellite the size and shape of a soft drink can. Into a few hundred grams and a few cubic centimetres, the teams have to fit everything a real satellite has: power, sensors, a communication system, parachute recovery and their own scientific mission. This is not a classroom exercise. It is real aerospace engineering on a student scale, with all the challenges that entails: budget, mass and volume constraints, hardware integration, embedded software, telemetry, data analysis and a technical defence before a panel of professionals.
16 Teams, 800 Metres of Altitude and Real-Time Data
The final brought together 16 teams from all over Spain, made up of students in compulsory secondary education (ESO), upper secondary (Bachillerato) and vocational training, after passing the regional phases. During the main day at the air base, the participants launched their CanSats using rockets, reaching altitudes of between 650 and 800 metres. Once in the air, the minisatellites began to do what any satellite does in orbit: transmit data in real time during the flight. Communication systems, environmental sensors, pressure and temperature telemetry, GPS modules, imaging experiments and secondary missions designed by each team were put to the test in a matter of minutes of descent. After the launches, each team had to analyse its data and defend its project before the jury to demonstrate the rigour of its design.
NIMBUSAT, the Best CanSat in Spain 2026
The NIMBUSAT team, from the Valencian Community, was named the best CanSat in Spain 2026 and will represent the country in the international phase organised by the ESA alongside the other European finalists.
Extremadura, an Educational Benchmark in STEM
Beyond the result, the event has established Extremadura as a benchmark for the CanSat programme in Spain. The Director-General for Vocational Training, Innovation and Educational Inclusion of the Junta de Extremadura, Carmen Gómez, summed it up like this: “CanSat is much more than a technological competition. It is an educational experience that fosters teamwork, the solving of real problems and the practical application of scientific and technological knowledge.” Gómez also highlighted the role of pioneering initiatives such as MiniCanSat, which extends the methodology to primary and special education students, ensuring that the vocation for space and technology begins long before secondary school. The organisation was supported by the Air and Space Force, which provided the base’s facilities and the technical support needed for the launches.
