During a week filled with emotions, reflections, and cinematic discoveries, the MiradasDoc International Documentary Film Festival and Market illuminated the hearts and minds of attendees with its seventeenth edition, held from March 15 to 22, 2024.
The curtain rose on March 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Guía de Isora Municipal Theater, marking the beginning of a cinematic adventure that promised to take viewers through the deepest emotions and most vivid realities. The screening of “La Hojarasca” (Leaf Storm), directed by the talented Macu Machín, became an emotional moment that would resonate throughout the days to come.
This documentary, a moving exploration of the complexities of family relationships, nostalgia for the past, and the weight of heritage, set the stage for a week full of films that challenged, inspired, and captivated.
Among the more than thirty films screened, international productions stood out, especially those from the Canary Islands, which shone brightly. Titles such as “Aitana” (2023) by Marina Alberti, “Absolution” (2023) by Juan Alfredo Amil, and “Bloom” (2023) wove stories that captured the attention and hearts of the audience.
One of the highlights of this edition was the special section “Mirada Canaria,” a tribute to the region’s vibrant and diverse documentary production. Two films selected for the opening and closing galas, “La hojarasca” (2024) by Macu Machín and “Un volcán habitado” (2023) by David Pantaleón and José Víctor Fuentes, ignited applause and left an indelible mark on the audience.
But MiradasDoc is much more than a film showcase; it’s a melting pot of encounters, collaborations, and discoveries. At the heart of the festival is MiradasDoc Market, the convergence point where agreements are forged, new narratives are explored, and the diversity of documentary cinema is promoted.
This year, the market welcomed 17 projects from Africa, Latin America, and Europe, demonstrating the global reach and cultural richness that define MiradasDoc. Renowned television channels and distributors, such as Al Jazeera Documentary Channel, Deutsche Welle, RAI, Caracol TV, Curta, and RTP, immersed themselves in this vibrant exchange of ideas and visions.
The workshops, labs, and meetings that comprised the MiradasDoc Market not only offered professional development opportunities but also highlighted the festival’s commitment to promoting narrative diversity and cultural exchange within the world of documentary film.
Thus, during an unforgettable week, MiradasDoc 2024 stood as a beacon for film lovers and the simply curious. In its emotionally charged screenings, passionate discussions, and discovery-filled encounters, the festival celebrated the richness of documentary cinema and the realities of the world it captures with its authentic and committed gaze.
