The CIS opens the 5th Conference on the Sociology of Gender with a call to address inequality as a structural issue

Madrid, 9 March 2026. The Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS) today opened the 5th Conference on the Sociology of Gender, as part of the commemoration of International Women’s Day, consolidating this event as a benchmark space for academic analysis and debate on gender inequalities in Spain — and S22 Digital organised the event.

The institutional opening featured the participation of institutional and academic representatives, notably the address by the Government Delegate, Pilar Bernabé García.

During the day, the importance of integrating the gender perspective into contemporary sociological analysis was underlined.

The CIS Director-General for Coordination and Research, Silvia García Ramos, described the conference as a “consolidated space for debate and knowledge production”, aimed at giving visibility to women’s intellectual leadership in sociology and fostering balanced representation in the public sphere. She also stressed that gender equality should not be understood as a sectoral issue, but as a structural dimension that runs through key areas such as employment, care, education and political participation. For his part, the President of the CIS, José Félix Tezanos, described the historical inequality between men and women as a “social pathology” that has conditioned the development of societies, defending equality as an essential principle for social and democratic balance. (CIS)

The programme of this first day included, in addition to the opening ceremony, the address by the sociologist María Ángeles Durán, National Prize for Sociology and Political Science, who explored the concept of “invisible jobs” in the Spanish economy, focusing on the importance of unpaid work.
