Sunflowers in Carmona: How We Turned a Natural Phenomenon into a Digital Tourism Product

Last Updated on 18 de July de 2026 by S22 Digital

Every summer, the fields surrounding Carmona turn into a sea of sunflowers that follow the sun, with the town’s white silhouette outlined in the background. It is one of the most spectacular landscapes of the Sevillian countryside. And yet, until now, this phenomenon was experienced spontaneously: a quick photo, a splash of colour on the way to another destination. What was missing was a story and a digital gateway to turn it into a true tourism experience. At S22 Digital, we set out to change that, and so El Girasol de Carmona was born — the tourism product we present through girasolescarmona.com.

The Challenge

Carmona welcomes more than 300,000 tourists a year and has over 3,500 hectares of sunflowers that bloom for around 90 days. The potential was enormous, but it was unstructured: there was no recognisable brand, no centralised practical information, and no content to help visitors decide when to come, what to see and how to make the most of their visit beyond the classic photograph. The brief was clear: to transform a natural, seasonal phenomenon into a structured, appealing tourism product available all year round.

The Solution: A Brand, a Story and a Website

We began by creating a warm, memorable identity around Pipo, the project’s mascot. Pipo gives voice and personality to all the communication and accompanies visitors from the moment they plan their trip until they arrive at the fields. On top of that brand, we built girasolescarmona.com, a website designed to inspire and, at the same time, to solve.

“I’m Pipo, and these are my fields.” The mascot becomes the common thread of the entire experience, from the first click to the last photo.

The heart of the project is the storytelling of the sunflower —with a blooming and harvest calendar— so that visitors understand that Carmona offers something different at every time of year, and not only during the June and July bloom.

Based on that narrative, we organised the experience into clear, easy-to-explore blocks:

  • Routes through the town and the countryside —the Basic Route through the historic centre, Roman Carmona or El Almendral, among others— with direct links to Google Maps so you can follow them without getting lost.
  • Points of interest that bring together the monumental, Roman and natural heritage of the area.
  • Gallery and social image with an invitation to share photos under the hashtag #GirasolDeCarmona, which activates the visitor community itself.
  • Practical information on how to get there —Carmona is just 35 km from Seville—, free parking and the 2026 season’s event calendar.

A Digital Approach Designed for the Visitor and the Region

The website connects three worlds that usually run separately: nature (the fields and their cycle), culture (Carmona’s historic and Roman heritage) and the local economy (the oil, the sunflower seeds and the artisanal products born from those same sunflowers). All of this with a responsive design, made to be consulted from a mobile phone right there in the fields, clear navigation and an architecture geared towards search rankings, to capture anyone searching for “sunflowers in Seville” and turn that search into a real visit.

The project has also been developed hand in hand with the Ayuntamiento de Carmona (Carmona Town Council) and Tourism de Carmona, integrating the new proposal within the municipality’s official tourism ecosystem.

The Result

El Girasol de Carmona finally offers a digital gateway to one of Andalusia’s great natural spectacles. In a single place, visitors find the what, the when, the where and the how of their experience. The municipality gains a tool to reduce tourism seasonality, showcase its heritage and link the visit with local produce. And the brand is ready to grow season after season. A phenomenon that was once admired only in passing is now a tourism product with a name, a story and a future.
