3rd Conference against Disinformation – CLABE (Ateneo de Madrid)

On 23 October, the Ateneo de Madrid hosted the 3rd Conference against Disinformation, a national and international benchmark forum on the challenges posed by information manipulation and the strategies needed to combat it from journalism, education and public institutions. The event, organised by CLABE, brought together prominent figures from the academic, media and institutional spheres. Over an intense day, essential topics were addressed, such as the role of journalism in the face of disinformation, media literacy, fact-checking initiatives and regulatory responses to the phenomenon of fake news.

A Day of Reflection and Commitment

The opening was led by Arsenio Escolar, president of the Club Abierto de Editores (CLABE), followed by the inaugural talks by Ramón Salaverría (Universidad de Navarra) and Lucas Graves (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), who offered an overview of journalistic practice in Europe and the United States. The morning debate panels brought together representatives of foundations, associations and organisations committed to information transparency, such as the Fundación Comunicando Futuro, the Observatorio de Medios e Información Responsable, AlfaMedia and Más Democracia. The role of the CNMC, UNESCO and the Fundación Cibervoluntarios in promoting media literacy and digital education was also highlighted. During the session on fact-checking, professionals from EFE Verifica, Maldita.es and VerificaRTVE took part, analysing the challenges of fact-checking in a media environment marked by immediacy and information overload. Before the midday break, Diego Jesús González Vargas, deputy director-general of the Department of National Security, underlined the importance of cooperation between administrations and civil society in the fight against digital disinformation.

An Afternoon of Analysis and Perspectives

The afternoon session began with the presentation of the book “Comprometidos con la verdad. Propuestas para mejorar la calidad del periodismo” (Committed to the truth. Proposals to improve the quality of journalism), by its authors Borja Adsuara and Elena Herrero-Beaumont, moderated by Raúl Magallón. Next, the panel dedicated to media professionals brought together the presidents of FAPE, DirCom and AMDComVal, in a debate moderated by Purificación González, on the ethical values and sustainability of contemporary journalism. The final block addressed the regulatory response to disinformation, with an intervention by Ángel García Castillejo, vice-president of the CNMC, and a talk by Mihailo Jovetic, executive director of the European Association of Independent Media Publishers, on the role of artificial intelligence in the creation of news. The day concluded with a debate among the spokespeople of the parliamentary groups in the Congress, moderated by José Manuel González-Huesa, and the closing speech by Álex Grijelmo, writer and journalist, introduced by Arsenio Escolar.
